The Leadoff: Oakes Wins Tronsky Tour; Thomas Continues Hot Streak

The 68th Nick Tronsky Tournament wrapped up after two weekends of intense competition at TKB Club in Vernon, CT, with David Oakes emerging as the champion. Oakes put together a stellar five-game series, rolling scores of 131, 158, 157, 183, and 134, combined with a 120-pin handicap, for a winning total of 883. The close competition saw Andy Louth finishing just nine pins behind at 874, while Stephanie St. Jean rounded out the top three with an 868.

The tournament showcased some impressive performances beyond the top finishers. Ken Thomas delivered the highest single-game score of the event with a blistering 208, while Gary Santora recorded the best scratch total with a 778. With 106 bowlers participating, the event lived up to its reputation as a highlight of the local duckpin season.

One of the biggest storylines of the tournament was Ken Thomas’s recent hot streak. The Johnson’s Lanes bowler had already rolled a 212 in league play just days before the Tronsky and carried that momentum into the tournament. Reflecting on his 208 game, Thomas credited a strong start and key conversions down the stretch. “I opened with a five-bagger,” he said. “After an open in the seventh, I knew I needed a mark to have a shot at 200. I struck in the eighth, covered a spare break in the ninth, and at that point, I felt confident I’d get there.

”Thomas’s recent success comes under unusual circumstances—he’s been bowling with a knee injury. “I sprained my sliding knee five boxes into the doubles at Lucky Strike but kept going. Probably a mistake, but I shot a 465 for three games,” he shared. The injury forced him to adjust his approach, slowing his delivery and focusing on precision, which, ironically, has led to some of his best bowling. “All bowlers know there are ebbs and flows to this game. I’m just enjoying this while I can and hoping to carry it into the Eastern Classic in a couple of weeks.

”With his game clicking at the right time, Thomas will be a bowler to watch in the upcoming tournaments. As the season rolls on, he and the rest of the Tronsky competitors will look to build on their performances in one of the region’s most competitive stretches of the year.
